Business Licenses
All entities conducting business in Prince George County for any amount of time are required to purchase a business license.
- Submit a request for a business license to the Planning Department (804-722-8678). (If operating a home business, complete the Home Occupation form online and return to Planning for zoning approval.)
- Once approved, record business name with Circuit Court Clerk’s office (804-733-2640).
- Once complete, report to the Commissioner of the Revenue (804-722-8740) to purchase your business license. Rates as follows:

Site Plan Review:
Prior to submitting a site plan for review, you must record an engineer certified survey at the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office at the Courthouse.
Site Plan Review Team meets with clients on the first, second and fourth Thursdays at 9:00am in the Planning Dept. The Team consists of representatives from the following: Building Official/Fire Marshal, County Engineer, Fire Services, Health Dept., Planning Dept., Police Dept. and VDOT.
Deadline:
Requests for all site meetings scheduled for a given Thursday must be submitted by 5:00pm the previous Monday.
- Submit a preliminary client meeting request to introduce site and allow Team input prior to plan submittal. Potential zoning issues can be discussed then.
- Submit initial site plan (12 sets of complete plans) and meeting request form to Planning Dept. by 5:00pm Monday to be considered at that Thursday’s Site Plan Review meeting.
- Comments will be submitted to you in 3 weeks via email and US mail
- Subsequent plan submittals (12 sets of complete plans) must be submitted by 5:00pm Monday to be considered at that Thursday Site Plan Review meeting. Comments due in 3 weeks.
- Your site plan is approved and you will be notified once the Team has no additional comments and signs the plans.
Building Permit Process:
The Dept. of Building Inspections is charged with issuing permits and conducting inspections for all new construction, alterations, repairs, removal, demolition or other building operations in compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.
Submit an application for building permit with 3 sets of plans, a copy of the recorded deed and plat. Separate plans are required for electric, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, gas and water/sewer.
Minimum Information for Commercial & Industrial Plans:
- Construction type
- Use Group
- Occupant load
- Partition type materials
- Fire rated assemblies (design numbers, continuity details and description, location)
- Exits identified and sign locations
- Door schedule with follow minimum: lock type, closer, fire rating, panic hardware
- Interior finish information (details, schedule)
- Fire rated penetration sealing methods
- ADA requirements
- Requirement for fire protection systems (sprinklers, alarms, hood systems)
- Fire damper/duct smoke detector locations
- Consistency of plans from sheet to sheet
- Location Plan (for partial floor plans and shopping centers)
In the event that the above information is not provided on the original submitted plans, it is required to be included on the revised project drawings, which must be submitted prior to permit issuance.
