Prince George County Historical Highlights:
- Formed in 1702 from Charles City County
- Named for Prince George of Denmark
- Native son, Richard Bland, was an early leader in the struggle for colonial rights
- Remained relatively removed from the Revolutionary War
- Civil War, in 1860’s, ravaged the County…Battle of the Crater and Battle of Petersburg were fought on original Prince George soil
- Edmund Ruffin, an ardent secessionist, was the “Father of Agricultural Chemistry”
- Czech and Slovak families emigrated to the County to purchase farms and establish communities, such as New Bohemia
- In the 20th century, the County joined with Petersburg and Hopewell in industrial dependence
- As World War I began, Fort Lee was established
